Written by Susie Flores, MBA When I think back to the start of my journey, I never imagined that accepting a receptionist position would lead me to a leadership role in economic development. But that's the beauty of trusting the process—even when you’re not entirely sure where it’s taking you.

My story began in 1997 in Brownsville, Texas. I was a college student at the University of Texas at Brownsville, working part-time as a logistics coordinator at a distribution warehouse called Airpax Technologies. The company was the twin operation to a maquiladora in Matamoros, Philips Technologies, which manufactured circuit breakers for major HVAC companies like Carrier and Trane. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that experience would quietly plant the first seeds of my interest in global trade, logistics, and binational business and later to economic development where I would be able to recruit this type of industry to my community.

After moving to McAllen, I applied for an executive assistant position at the McAllen Economic Development Corporation (EDC). I was new in town and eager to find my place. Although I was a top candidate, the organization selected someone else for the role. However, they saw something in me—my experience, drive, and work ethic. A few days later, they called and offered me a position as their receptionist, with the possibility of future growth. I accepted, not knowing that I would eventually fall in love with economic development.

That one “yes” changed the course of my career.

Over the past 23 years, I’ve worn many hats within the organization—receptionist, executive assistant to the President and CEO, Research and Data Coordinator, Marketing and Research Coordinator, Director of U.S. Business Recruitment—and today, I proudly serve as Vice President of Business Recruitment and Expansion. Every role taught me something new. Every position gave me the tools, exposure, and confidence to grow as a leader and, more importantly, as a person.

But growth doesn’t happen without challenge.

For a time, I got comfortable in my role—especially after becoming a new mom. My husband’s work schedule was the complete opposite of mine, and we didn’t have family nearby to help care for our sons. Going back to school to finish my degree felt impossible. I kept putting my goals on hold.

After many years of feeling stuck, I reached a turning point. I realized that if I wanted more—for myself, for my family, and for my community—I had to make a change. The desire to grow professionally and inspire others pushed me forward. I researched programs and found the perfect fit: South Texas College’s Bachelor of Applied Technology in Organizational Leadership. Their hybrid class schedule allowed me to work full-time and still pursue my education. I enrolled in 2015, and after balancing work, motherhood, and school, I graduated in 2017 magna cum laude. That moment—walking across the stage with my children watching—was one of the proudest of my life. My goals and aspirations continue to grow bigger where I decided to perused a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.  I enrolled for the MBA Program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where I successfully graduated in 2021 with an MBA and with a specialization in Marketing.  It was also this new experience that gave me the tools to learn more about working with entrepreneurs and next thing I new I was already hosting international prospects from Mexico wanting to expand their business to the U.S. and for the last three years I have been helping many small to mid-size entrepreneurs relocate and connect with different organizations and professionals that have guided them to set up successful operation in McAllen.

My leadership journey has taught me that it’s never too late to achieve your goals. There’s no such thing as a perfect time—only the right time, and that moment begins the day you decide you’re ready.

I've also learned that there’s always a way to get results. When we hit a roadblock, the key is to keep moving forward and not be afraid to ask someone new for help. In my experience, if we didn’t get the results we expected the first time, it was often because we didn’t ask the right person.

I take full ownership of my prospects and always go above and beyond to support them. My goal is to ensure they not only launch their projects—but succeed with confidence.  This approach not only allows me to do a good job, but to foster long-term relationships that turn into friendships.

Today, my leadership philosophy is rooted in empathy, grit, and lifelong learning. I believe in leading by example and investing in people. Whether I’m mentoring a colleague, collaborating with a team, or meeting with companies looking to invest in McAllen, I try to create space for others to be seen, heard, and empowered.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is helping bring jobs and opportunity to the community I call home. I’ve seen firsthand how economic development changes lives—how one new business can create dozens, even hundreds, of local jobs. That’s what drives me every day.

To anyone just starting their journey—or questioning whether they’re capable of more—my message is simple: You are. Don’t be afraid to start small. Take the receptionist job. Say yes to the unexpected opportunity. Pursue your education even if the path looks different than you imagined. And never underestimate the power of showing up with heart and a positive attitude day after day.

Leadership isn’t about a title—it’s about the impact you make on others and the legacy you leave behind.

I’m still learning. I’m still growing. And I’m still incredibly grateful for the journey that brought me here.  I would also like to leave you with one of my favorite quotes by Jay Danzie that I incorporated in my career. Your smile is your logo,

Your Personality is your business card, and

The way you make others feel is your trademark.
